Summer is here and it is once again fire prevention month. Numerous fire safety campaigns are being conducted every day in offices, schools, and local communities, all aiming to raise awareness and promote a safer environment for everyone.

Last March 14, 2019, the City Government of Malabon through its Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (Malabon DRRMO) conducted the “DRR Caravan” for the fourth consecutive year at the Malabon City Amphitheater and Oreta Sports Center. The program engaged school children of Malabon, along with their parents and teachers, in raising awareness on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). Although conducted in March in observance of the Fire Prevention Month, the program did not just focus on increasing the participants’ preparedness and understanding on fire hazards, but also with other potential hazards that may occur such typhoons, flashfloods, earthquakes, tsunamis, among others.

We are living in exciting times given the speed by which new technologies and scientific breakthroughs are coming out. Aside from those S & T news coming out in national dailies, a lot more developments are happening in the regions that are not getting the exposure that they deserve. Many of these scientific studies and locally-made technologies came out of specific regional needs, which make their dissemination to the public even more critical.
